Playing Blackjack

As well as being a very popular game played by many people as a source of entertainment, Blackjack has also become quite a serious game played in the majority of casinos.

History of Blackjack

Most people believe that Blackjack originated from a combination of various French card games such as French Ferme and Chemin de Fer. However, Blackjack as we know it today developed in French casinos under the name of ‘Vingt-et-un’ (Twenty-one). It began being played in America in the early 1800s under the name of Blackjack – the name deriving from an early rule that if a player was dealt a jack and an ace of spades, the players would be paid out extra.

During the 1950s and 1960s, books were published on how players could improve their odds at beating the dealer. The books discussed ‘card counting’ techniques and the consensus was that casinos had changed their rules to increase their margins. Because of this, Blackjack players stopped playing the game in large numbers until casinos were forced to revert back to the original rules.

Today, blackjack remains one of the most popular casino games.
